The Green Pen Poolesville, MD, United States Over the course of seven months from October 2007 to April 2008, we wrote a series of articles concerning environmental issues in our local community. We created a webpage within our school website where we published our articles. Five of our articles were also featured in the school newspaper. We attempted to cover a wide range of topics, from suggestions for "living green" to students’ positive environmental contributions. We posted our articles regularly and reported on the issues in a timely fashion.
The Model High School for the Hearing Impaired Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan The Model High School for the Hearing Impaired lacked a number of facilities. Like other government schools of Pakistan it was under-funded and in disrepair. The school compound was bare and gloomy leading to a depressing atmosphere. Our team tackled this by planting saplings and green plants in the school ground. Swings were installed to provide the students with a 'play-area'. Benches were also placed on various places on the school premises, which were otherwise bare and not used. Tap water in Pakistan is generally impure and a great cause of illness among children. The school lacked the availability of clean drinking water which we found to be a great concern, and so a water cooler with a water filter was installed on campus. We'd like to thank our school, without whose generous monetary contributions, this project would not have been a success.
Learning about Invasives & Removing Invasive Garlic Mustard Weeds Concord, MA, United States We learned about invasive species in our class, then worked to remove Garlic Mustard, an invasive weed that is growing in some of the public lands in Concord, Massachusetts. Garlic mustard is not only invasive, but it releases a substance that disrupts the healthy association between mycorrhizal fungi and trees that grow in the soil. Garlic mustard kills off the fungi, which harms small, growing trees such as sugar maples.
